SEVERE MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS

Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a severe mental health disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, and difficulty with daily functioning. In India, approximately 1 in 100 individuals are affected by schizophrenia, with symptoms typically emerging in late adolescence or early adulthood. While schizophrenia can significantly disrupt a person’s life, early intervention and effective treatment, including medication and therapy, can help manage symptoms and improve the overall quality of life for those affected.

Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme mood swings, ranging from manic or hypomanic episodes to depressive states. These mood shifts affect energy levels, behavior, and the ability to perform everyday tasks. In India, 1 in 100 individuals are likely to experience bipolar disorder at some point in their lifetime. With appropriate treatment, including medication and psychotherapy, individuals can manage symptoms and lead more stable, productive lives. Early diagnosis and care are essential in reducing the frequency and severity of mood episodes, ultimately improving quality of life.

OCD
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder marked by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) aimed at relieving the anxiety caused by the obsessions. In India, 2-3% of the population is affected by OCD, which can interfere with daily life and cause significant distress. While the disorder can be overwhelming, treatment options like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and medication are highly effective. With proper treatment, many individuals are able to significantly reduce symptoms and regain control over their lives.

Conversion Disorder
Conversion Disorder involves neurological symptoms, such as paralysis, blindness, or seizures, that are not explained by a medical condition and often follow psychological stress or trauma. In India, 1-2% of individuals experience conversion disorder, with women being more commonly affected. The condition can significantly disrupt both physical and emotional well-being. However, with appropriate treatment, including psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), individuals can manage their symptoms and regain control over daily activities, improving overall functioning and quality of life.
